Location and Access

Did you know, that it is crucial to ensure an Uninterruptible Power Supply is located in the most suitable environment to maintain optimum operation, whilst also providing the correct level of access

There are multiple factors to consider when deciding where the UPS will be installed or indeed relocated:- from environmental factors to structurally safe conditions.

Our team has been providing expert advice for over 30 years, to ensure all our client’s business investment is protected. From pre-installation factors to security, below we shall explore a selection of recommendations from our specialist team

When deciding where a UPS will be located or moved to, it is crucial to fully inspect the physical room both in-person and via structural documentation. Questions to first consider, to ensure this location will provide the correct amount of suitability:

  • Is the room large enough and what is the layout?
  • Is there a schematic?
  • How do you access the room?
  • What is the floor loading of the final location?
  • Are floor voids or plinths required?

These are only a selection of points to observe but are crucial for not only protecting the UPS but also from a business Health & Safety perspective. Most often than not, the floor loading is very rarely considered but is critical, do you know how much weight the room can take before it has reached capacity? Another important aspect is access – will service technicians be able to access the UPS for regular maintenance? Our expert team can provide a full on-site survey, where the points above and more will be reviewed.

The next important point to review is where the room is located within the building, to ensure the installation or relocation runs smoothly. Is it located within the main building or part of an external outbuilding structure? Is the room located on any of the adjacent floors and if so, how will you get the UPS up there? Specialist equipment can be used to move the UPS, but many factors should be considered, such as;

  • If using a specialist stairlift, what is the weight capacity, and will it safely hold the UPS pallet?
  • Plotting your route, are the external and internal doors wide enough?
  • If using a lift, are the doors and internal lift space wide enough, and will the maximum load be sufficient for both the UPS and the installation team?

Once again, these are only a selection of points to consider and it is better to be over-prepared than face a problem that needs a solution on the day. Remember – the UPS needs to remain upright at all times due to sensitive components and boards within the units.

Once you have confirmed your UPS’s optimum location or relocation, you will want to ensure your business investment is protected. This will be from not only a location perspective but also from an operational/administration process, for example;

  • Is the room accessible via access code or will pre-authorisation be required for future maintenance and/or service visits?
  • Who within the company will be responsible for security, not only for the UPS but also for allowing engineers to visit the site?
  • What health and safety forms or procedures will need to be conducted before the UPS service or maintenance visit?
  • Will there be internal sign-offs that will need additional information from the UPS provider to complete, before the visit?

Ensuring you have a clear operational process is vital. Many more factors may also need to be reviewed, as no business or building is the same. With a full on-site survey, you can be guaranteed that all requirements and recommendations are considered, and bespoke to your business.
